Hi Paul. I don’t often wake for any length of time during the night so probably can’t be much help here. My only comment is that on the relatively few times this has happened to me I have tried to view it as a friend, not an enemy. When I have realised I am not going to get straight back to sleep I get up, go to my study, sit in my contemplative chair, and ask if God has anything in particular to say to me. A couple of times some very specific things have come and then I write them down. Other times I have just asked what it means to say “hello” to whatever is going on – and then try and leave it at that. But this makes it sound as though it’s something I often experience, and it’s not, so I don’t want to mislead. And there is certainly nothing wrong with reading a novel if that works for you! Perhaps a really boring novel would work best LOL.Brian

As a good sleeper, I have been surprised by recently waking up at night worrying about something. Use some contemplative prayer, but haven’t found it easy. Reading a novel has been best. Middle of the night is a difficult time to get perspective. You were referring to before going to sleep, but wondered about your exeperience of mid-night times.

Thank you so much for this blog at the right time for me.
I am now divorced 4 years and very lonely. I have tried Christian dating sites which were so disappointing and I ended up closing my accounts, lost money in the process.

I love the angle you are coming from – to do an appraisal of my whole life. At the moment it feels like I am totally stuck. There is just an overwhelming silence but I know times of waiting on God can be times of preparation.
