In reply to Barry. While I understand why this might be your perspective, do consider the years Pell spent covering up and ignoring the rife abuse going on under his nose at Ballarat in the 1970s. He knew and did nothing.

Remember that Pell turned a blind eye to the abuse suffered at Ballarat in the 1970s. He is a far cry from even POSSIBLY being considered “a sacrificial lamb”. He’s gotten what he deserves.

Thank you Brian for your wise words here on a very difficult topic. I have read much from those in the legal profession about how amazed they are at this verdict given the evidence (or lack of it) yet we must respect the legal process. Of course, none of us know what actually happened except those involved and God himself so we should be wary of judgement. I am saddened by what has happened all round and agree that maybe Cardinal Pell’s final act will be to accept and suffer for the wrong-doing of so many under his care even if he himself was not directly involved he could have done so much to prevent these things happening.
Salutary lessons for all of us in positions of authority!

All good points Brian, innocent or guilty the church loses …. but I’m waiting for the appeal
process as I have an uneasy feeling about this. He may just be the victim of an understandable rage against the church …
